TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE FESTIVAL “MUSICAL SEPTEMBER”!

Imagine a journey from Cape Town to Tierra del Fuego, from a market in Morocco to a monastery in Nepal, from the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, to a deserted village on the Durmitor Mountain and to the untameable nature of the Lofoten islands in Norway. The musical journey around the world is a compliment to the immense musical width and ins piration, which originates in the roots of human diversity.

Elements of music- classical music too – are found in the treasury of old nations and this is why Musical September 2005 unites folk and classical musical dimensions from different continents. Join us and explore the cradle of classical music and find out where the different interpretations of our time take us. At the same time, Musical September 2005 continues to open new dimensions in the education of our young audience. We will build upon them and create better conditions and possibilities for more educational and creative work of good quality for young artists in the field of music. The members of the ensembles Carnival Band and Classic Buskers are among the most popular performers of educational programmes for youth in Europe and this is why we have invited them to play at both the beginning and the end of the festival. This enables us to present them to our young audience together with the concerts of the central programme.

CARNIVAL BAND

When excellent musicians embark in renaissance styles of music and when we believe that we have already matched them and been totally caught in this time, they surprise us with an excellent transformation of renaissance structure into Balkan jazz or some other style of music. The band makes its way around the world and in colourful “processions” of sound that skilfully link folk and classical music.

SONTONGA QUARTET

On our journey around the world we will stop on the African continent, the cradle of the human race and music. Sontonga quartet successfully present music from African musical tradition and South Africa is very proud of them. To the majority of European lovers of classical music, the names of modern African composers, such as Priaulx Rainier, Mokale Koapeng, Nofinishi Dwili and Justinian Tamusuza, are more or less unknown. Musical September offers us, in the European space, a rare, and in the Slovenian cultural space the first opportunity to experience classical sounds and harmonies from the hot, black continent.

WOODWIND QUINTET

These Sunday morning Slovenian performers will take us to India, where composers like Ravi Shankar are faithful to a two thousand year old tradition of Indian classical music, which is based on the melody and rhythm of the ancient ragas. Melody and rhythm are the basic guidance of the successful Brazilian composer Mário Tavares. His works have absorbed the elements of Samba and Brazilian traditional folk music and this is also true for the temperamental Sonata Latin by the British composer and flautist Mike Mower.
