The way he experiences music, his interpretation of it and above all his own music, which is based on melody, rhythm and harmony, has made Galliano famous and The way he experiences music, his interpretation of it and above all his own music, which is based on melody, rhythm and harmony, has made Galliano famous and has enabled him to establish his frequently ignored and neglected instrument in classical as well as jazz music. His father being an accordion teacher, Richard Gallano has naturally been an accordion player from young age. He, like many others, was fascinated by Astor Piazzolla and his new tango. In 1983, Piazzolla invited Galliano to Comédie Française, where he played as a soloist on the bandoneon, the music Piazzolla wrote for Shakespeare’s “Midsummer’s Night Dream”. This marked the beginning of a friendship that lasted until the death of Piazzola in 1992. Under the influence of Piazzola, Galliano created “new musette” based on the traditional French waltz. Composing helped him become one of the most exciting and dynamically, rhythmically as well as harmoniously unsurpassable accordion players. We can safely say that Galliano has enthused and inspired the whole generation of accordion players around the world. Numerous young musicians play his music and imitate his style; it is well known that there are more than 50 different versions of Galliano’s piece “Valse à Margaux”. From among the musicians participating in his projects or those he shared the concert stage with, let us mention only the most important ones: Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Joe Zawinul, Philip Catherine, Charlie Haden, Enrico Rava, Toots Thielemans, Jan Garbarek, Paquito D’Rivera, Michel Petrucciani, Gilberto Gil and numerous others. Many of his projects, CDs and compositions have won prestigious awards, such as the important Victoires de la Musique, which Galliano won for the project with the Chamber Orchestra from Toscana. On that occasion, the orchestra and Galliano paid tribute to Piazzola. At the opening concert of the Music September, the Chamber Orchestra of the Slovene Philharmonic will, in their turn, pay tribute to Richard Galliano, the composer and grand master of accordion with a personal note.
